Overview

What is Dermatologic Surgery?

Dermatologic surgery covers the in-office removal and repair of skin growths, cysts, and lesions: procedures that are too involved for a primary care office but don't require a hospital trip. At PS Dermatology, our board-certified dermatologists perform a wide range of surgical procedures using local anesthesia in a comfortable outpatient setting, typically in under an hour.

We remove cysts, lipomas, skin tags, and other benign growths; perform reconstructive scar revision (including workers' compensation cases); and offer cryosurgery for actinic keratoses and other superficial lesions. Most procedures are covered by insurance when medically necessary. Our team focuses on clean, minimal-scarring technique, closing wounds with the same care we'd want for our own family.

Patient Questions

Frequently asked questions

Where are surgical procedures performed?
All surgical procedures are performed in our Bridgewater office in a clean, comfortable procedure room. There is no need for a hospital trip, no general anesthesia, and you can drive yourself home after most procedures. Larger or more complex cases that need additional surgical resources are referred to a partnered surgical facility, but most cysts, lipomas, lesions, and biopsies are handled entirely in-office.
Is local anesthesia used for cyst and lipoma removal?
Yes. The area is numbed with a local anesthetic (typically lidocaine) before any cutting begins, so the procedure itself is painless. You may feel pressure or tugging but not sharp pain. After the anesthetic wears off, mild soreness is common for a day or two and is well-controlled with over-the-counter pain relievers.
Will surgical removal leave a scar?
Any procedure that breaks the skin leaves some scar, but a dermatologist trained in cutaneous surgery uses techniques to minimize scarring: planning the incision along skin tension lines, closing in layers, and using fine sutures. Most patients are very pleased with how flat and faint the final scar becomes, typically over 6 to 12 months. We will discuss expected scarring before the procedure.
How long is recovery after a typical excision?
For a small cyst or lipoma, most patients are back to normal activity within 1–2 days. Sutures are typically removed at 7–14 days depending on location. Avoid heavy lifting, swimming, and prolonged sun exposure on the area for about 2 weeks. We will give you written aftercare instructions tailored to your specific procedure.
Are surgical procedures covered by insurance?
Most medically necessary excisions (painful cysts, growing or bothersome lipomas, suspicious lesions) are covered by major insurance plans. Procedures done purely for cosmetic reasons (e.g., removing a non-bothersome small skin tag for appearance) are typically not covered. We will verify your specific coverage before scheduling.
